Plausible Purpose is a series of ceramic contraptions developed during my time here at ARTS ITOYA residency in Takeo, Saga prefecture, Japan. Inspired by the the Mingei movement and its appreciation and emphasis on functional work that existed beyond their aesthetic value, these ceramic contraptions are designed to exist as both as oil lamps and as a sumi ink makers. The audience is invited to use the sumi produced from these contraptions to write on the paper suspended on the wall. The work seeks to reimagine a specific exhibition of electric lamps at Mifuneyama Rakuen hotel by TeamLabs, which change colour as people move around. Plausible Purpose exists as a contemporary rumination of the ceramic culture that thrive in nearby towns, while the vessels themselves seek to capture the rhythm of human touch on clay, in turn capturing the sacredness of the ceramic process and craftsmanship.
